Mentoring Mentoring visits are focussed on progression, attitude to learning and school. Wherever possible Leeds REACH will act as a signposting agency and refer young people onto other programmes/activities which may occur during and after the school day.
Holiday Activities A positive activities programme involving workshops, outward bound activities and team building days is offered for young people residing in North East Leeds. Over the last two years this programme has been partly subsided by Leeds City Council 'Well Being Fund' and Leeds City Council PAYP.
Leeds REACH Re-engagement Programme Current Curriculum
Leeds REACH follows the school academic calendar, with pupils enrolling each term and being phased back into their host school within 11-13 weeks. When a young person reaches 16 (and where applicable) through partnership arrangements with Barnardo’s Yorkshire we refer onto the Barnardo’s ‘Believe’ project. This service focuses solely on young people who are N.E.E.T
(Not in Education, Employment or Training) attendees qualify for E.M.A. The Leeds REACH curriculum includes the following core elements:
- Understanding Young People Law & Order (NOCN STEP UP)
- DJ workshops (Art Awards & NOCN)
- Application of Number and Literacy (NOCN STEP UP)
- Drugs Education (NOCN STEP UP)
- Careers input
- Sport & Self Defence (NOCN STEP UP)
- Emotional management
- Mediation
- Education Support
- Conflict Resolution
- Weapons awareness (NOCN STEP UP)
- Health & Well Being (NOCN STEP UP)
Upon completion of the 12 week programme all young people referred via schools are returned with the support of a key worker/mentor. The key worker/mentor will support a young person’s re-integration for up to one term. Mentoring visits are centred upon progression, attitude to learning and school. Wherever possible Leeds REACH will act as a signposting agency and refer young people onto other programmes/activities which may occur during and after the school day. The Leeds REACH curriculum promotes:
- Communication
- Conflict resolution
- Academic Ability and Confidence
- Self esteem & Self Discipline
- Health Issues
- Self reflection & Realisation
- Maturity
Current Pupil Access
Leeds REACH is accessed via referrals from schools, Education Leeds and Leeds Youth service (via schools). On rare occasions a young person may be refused a place on application or during the course of the term. This may be due to their particular individual needs, (i.e. severe disability or mental health difficulties), for which Leeds REACH may be unable to accommodate. In some situations refusal or termination of a placement may be caused due to extreme disruptive and violent behaviour.
